THE DUCHESS
SHOW DATE: 9/21
SPEAKER(S): Joseph Schaub

Here's some information about the film:

Directed by Saul Dibb. Written by Jeffrey Hatcher, Anders Thomas Jensen and Saul Dibb. Starring Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes, Charlotte Rampling, Dominic Cooper, Hayley Atwell, and Simon McBurney.

2008 United Kingdom PG – 13 105 minutes

Synopsis

Long before the concept existed, the Duchess of Devonshire, Georgiana Spencer (Keira Knightley), was the original "It Girl." Like her direct ancestor Princess Diana, she was ravishing, glamorous and adored by an entire country. Determined to be a player in the wider affairs of the world, she proved that she could out-gamble, out-drink and outwit most of the aristocratic men who surrounded her. She helped usher in sweeping changes to England as a leader of the forward-thinking Whig Party. But even as her power and popularity grew, she was haunted by the fact that the only man in England she seemingly could not seduce was her very own husband, the Duke (Ralph Fiennes). When she tries to find her own way to be true to her heart and loyal to her duty, the resulting controversies and convoluted liaisons would leave all of London talking.

Cinema Sundays continues its 43rd series with the Baltimore premiere of The Dutchess. Our streak of English films continues unabated with this much acclaimed costume biopic drama! What could be more interesting than a fine good looking cast, super production values and 104 minutes of authentic English.

Our speaker for this week is Joseph Schaub from The College of Notre Dame, it’s a pleasure to welcome him back to Cinema Sundays.

I want to thank Larry Raifman for another controversial CSC discussion…Did we really see Jack kill Philip? Was that really Fiona or just a dream? I guess if you really want to know you can sit through Boy A again at the Charles.

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday,

Directed by John Crowley. Written by Mark O’Rowe. Starring Andrew Garfield, Peter Mullan, Shuan Evans, Siobhan Finneran and Katie Lyons.

2008 United Kingdom Rated R 100 minutes

Synopsis

Bright futures are undercut by dark pasts in BOY A, a quiet, ruminative tale about a violent act committed by a man in his tormented youth, and his haunting inability to find a way to have a peaceful adulthood years later. Fresh out of a 14-year prison sentence, 24-year-old Jack (Andrew Garfield) arrives in Manchester looking for a new start. He has a new name, a new job, and a carefully sealed criminal record, but an entire boyhood spent behind bars has left him permanently looking over his shoulder. Guided by his fatherly caseworker, Terry (Peter Mullan), Jack attempts to forge meaningful ties with a local girl and a chatty co-worker, but what happiness he finds is challenged when his true identity seeps (and then floods) through the cracks of his new façade.

Cinema Sundays continues its 43rd series with the Baltimore premiere of Boy A. This Intense portrait of a young boy’s dark past and its effect on his present continues the tradition of frothy light comedy so typical of the series. Lets face it! This series thrives on dramatic intensity and this week that’s what we’re offering. I’m back from 9 days skiing in Patagonia and ready for some good old fashion CSC fare.

Our speaker this week is Dr. Lawrence Raifman who has done great work for us in the past with L’enfant and most recently the extremely controversial The Life Before Her Eyes. I am convinced that his knowledge of law and psychology will result in an amazing discussion.

I also want to thank Mike Giuliano for sitting in for me and Sharon Bisco for speaking. I’m looking forward to working with both of you later in the season

It’s great to be back in Baltimore. You can only eat so many pounds of cow a day and see so many beautiful women.

Take that Argentina

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday,

Our guest speaker for Brick Lane is Psychiatrist Dr. Sharon Bisco who did such superb work for us with Lars and the Real Girl and also Alice’s House. It’s a pleasure to welcome her back to Cinema Sundays.

I will return to Baltimore on 9/8 and look forward to seeing you at the Charles on 9/14.
