Cinema Sundays at the Charles concludes its 42nd series on June29th with Gonzo: The life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. Written and Directed by Alex Gibney based on the writings of Hunter S. Thompson. Featuring among many others…Johnny Depp, George McGovern, Pat Buchanan, Jimmy Carter, and hosts of other pithy people.
2008 USA Rated R. 118 minutes.
Synopsis
Few journalists have attained the notoriety of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. His legendary status is due as much to his scintillating writing as his outrageous antics. He became a living legend whose persona often overshadowed his work. However, Thompson's steadfast ability to remain true to his convictions created an entirely new style of journalism, dubbed "gonzo," and has solidified his place in history as one of America's most influential writers and rebels. Fueled by a raging libido, Wild Turkey, and superhuman doses of drugs, Thompson was a true iconoclast: goring sacred cows with impunity, hilarity, and a steely-eyed obsession to right wrongs. Focusing on the good doctor's heyday--from 1965 to 1975--the film also includes clips of never-before-seen (and heard) home movies and audiotapes, and passages from unpublished manuscripts. --© Sundance Film Festival

If you missed it at the Maryland Film Festival, Cinema Sundays gives you another screening complete with bagels, coffee, and a most excellent guest speaker. This highly rated film (80% positive Rottentomatos.com) should provide the CSC radical audience (especially hat man) much grist for the mill.

Cinema Sundays Spring 2008 Series 42!
Sunday, June 15, 2008 Cinema Sundays at the Charles continues its 42nd series on June 15th with the Baltimore Premiere of Yella. Directed by Christian Petzold. Written by Christian Petzold and Simone Baer. Starring Nina Hoss, Devid Striesow, Hinnerk Schönemann, Burghart Klaussner, and Barbara Auer.
2007 Germany. NR 89 minutes.
Synopsis
Narrowly escaping her volatile ex-husband, Yella (Nina Hoss) flees her small hometown in former East Germany for a new life in the West. She finds a promising job with Philipp (Devid Striesow), a handsome business executive with whom an unlikely romance soon blossoms. But just as Yella seems poised to realize her dreams, she finds herself haunted by buried truths that threaten to destroy her newfound happiness.
Inspired by Herk Harveys 1962 cult classic Carnival of Souls, Yella offers a bracing critique of modern capitalist society by considering the current migration of men and women from former Eastern Bloc countries seeking prosperity in the West. It is Christian Petzolds fourth feature film and his third collaboration with Nina Hoss.
