Cinema Sundays is extremely proud to be presenting the premiere of The Illusionist. Every endeavor needs a grand finale and this should be it. The film doesn’t open until August 18th so this is a great opportunity to see it well ahead of schedule.
Our speaker for this week’s film comes to CSC from right next door! Vince Lancisi is the Director of Everyman Theatre and it’s a pleasure to welcome him to Cinema Sundays.
I want to thank our speaker for last week Mike Lurie. I also want to thank everyone who contributed to making the discussion for Wordplay a success. I know my own mediocre crossword skills have improved considerably after watching the film.

I look forward to seeing you for this our final week. Please join me for a nostalgic rendition of Rogers and Hammerstein’s You’ll Never Walk Alone after the discussion.

Description

"Wordplay" starts the story of the New York Times crossword puzzle, and the current and historical creative forces behind it. But as it dances across the story, filling it in as one of its devotees might across the puzzles, it reveals an entire amazing world behind its practice, creation, and history, from the annual crossword convention in Stamford to the breadth of individuals who enjoy it daily.
Many of us have been looking forward to Wordplay. What better way to spend Sunday morning than with a puzzle, a cup of coffee and a bagel. Many of you may know "puzzle master" Will Shortz from his Sunday Weekend Edition spots and it will be a pleasure to see him on screen. I personally hate the puzzle segment but only because I am so very bad at it.
Our speaker this week is Mike Lurie, sports reporter at WYPR and head of Public Relations at UMBC. I think his take on Wordplay should be interesting. It's a pleasure to welcome him to Cinema Sundays.

Description

The Devil and Daniel Johnston is a stunning portrait of a musical and artistic genius who nearly slipped away. Director Jeff Feuerzeig exquisitely depicts a perfect example of brilliance and madness going hand in hand with subject Daniel Johnston. As an artist suffering from manic depression with delusions of grandeur, Daniel Johnston's wild fluctuations, numerous downward spirals, and periodic respites are exposed in this deeply moving documentary.

Ladies and Gentlemen. Who among us cannot say that they may have deviated an inch or two away from the psychological norm! Who among us hasn’t taken a step or two off the deep end at some point or other in our lives. This weeks film promises to be an interesting venture into the darker realms of the soul.

Speaking of the darker realms of the soul, who among us didn’t enjoy last weeks’ completely bizarre, decadent and violent foray into the world down under. I want to thank Gavin Witt for taking on The Proposition and doing such a fabulous job. Way to go mayte.

Our speaker this week is David Reed who comes to us from The Maryland Institute College of Art. It’s a pleasure to welcome him to Cinema Sundays.

BTW don’t let the rather sucky trailer for this film keep you from attending this Sunday. Everyone who has seen The Devil and Daniel Johnston has spoken highly of it.

I look forward to seeing you this week. Don’t let perfect weather and sunshine get in the way of enjoying a Sunday morning’s cinematic bliss!
