What is it about? Based on novel of the same title by Chris Fuhrman, who died of cancer before the book, his first, was published in 1994. A gang of Catholic school 8th grade students (Culkin is one of the two leaders of the group) in 1974 Savannah get caught drawing an obscene comic book featuring priests and nuns. Who is in it? Kieran Culkin, Jena Malone, Jodie Foster, Vincent D'Onofrio
Why should I see it? "The notion that children can shed their mortal flesh (in their imaginations and dreams) is fantastically suggested via the film's many animated sequences. Faith and the possibility of mortal transcendence is particularly potent in these escape-from-reality scenarios though the director spends equal time authenticating the simple joys and brutal horrors of youth with walks through abandoned homes, bashful evocations of first-kisses and awkward, ethereal declarations of love." --Ed Gonzalez, © slant magazine
How much does it cost? Individual tickets are a bargain at the door for a mere $15. A price that includes a bottomless cup o'delicious COFFEE MILL coffee and a whole bevy of SAM'S BAGELS.
What else comes with this? A post screening q&a session with this week's guest speaker Rafael Alvarez, author of Storyteller and Orlo and Leini. Alvarez was educated in Catholic schools and as a child spent many hours reading the World Book Encylopedia. He decided, without knowing exactly why, to become a writer while in the 3rd grade at Linthicum Elementary School, having been moved by teacher Jean Ortgies and her narration of "Stuart Little," by E.B. White. In 2001, Alvarez left the Baltimore Sun after some 20 years on the City Desk and joined the Seafarers Internatinal Union to work on ships
