Based on the novel by Anne Tyler, A SLIPPPING DOWN
LIFE is the story of the unusual courtship of an
awkward young woman (Lili Tayler) and a charismatic
singer/songwriter (Guy Pearce), and the profound
effect that their unlikely relationship has on each
other's lives.

PRO:
Los Angeles Times' Kevin Crust: "The casting of Taylor
gives the film a powerful center, a bright light that
keeps it on course."

CON:
Variety's Joe Leydon calls the film "A curiously
bland drama that fails to fulfill the promise of its
early scenes."

I'M NOT SCARED
SHOW DATE: 5/16
SPEAKER(S): Larry Katz

Here's some information about the film:

Italy, 108 min., directed by Gabriele Salvatores
(MEDITERRANEO), written by Niccoló Ammaniti

Official Site:
http://www.miramax.com/imnotscared/index.html

An eerie and engrossing suspense thriller set in
southern Italy involving a 10-year-old Michele
(Guiseppe Cristiano) who spends his long summer days
riding his bike and running through the wheat fields.
Michele often plays alone, until one day he discovers
a hole in the ground, where a boy his age is chained
and imprisoned. The boy has clearly been starved and
mistreated. With the dreaminess that is a
10-year-old's truest treasure, Michele doesn't ask too
many questions, nor does he draw conclusions about why
the boy is in the hole, or who put him there. However,
as the film draws on, subtly revealing shocking
secrets about the adults in Michele's village, the
beauty of this utterly simple yet deadly powerful plot
come clear. I'M NOT SCARED is a moving film built on
images of the Italian landscape; strangely offset by
its startling loss-of-innocence story.

PRO:
"A reminder of true childhood, of its fears and
speculations, of the way a conversation can be
overheard but not understood, of the way that the
shape of the adult world forms slowly through the
mist." -- Roger Ebert, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES

CON:
"Acted in one flavor of broadly sliced prosciutto,
and marred with familiar digital punctuation, I'm Not
Scared needn't be prepped for Hollywood recycling --
it is its own homogenized remake." -- Michael
Atkinson, VILLAGE VOICE
