The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys
SHOW DATE: 6/2
SPEAKER(S): TBA

Here's some information about the film:

What is this week's film?
The Dangerous Lives of Alter Boys
U.S., 2002, 105 min., dir. Peter Care, (R.E.M.
RoadMovie)

What is it about?
Based on novel of the same title by Chris Fuhrman, who
died of cancer before the book, his first, was
published in 1994. A gang of Catholic school 8th
grade students (Culkin is one of the two leaders of
the group) in 1974 Savannah get caught drawing an
obscene comic book featuring priests and nuns. As
revenge for the punishment they received, they plan a
prank on a mean nun played by Jodie Foster, who also
co-produced the film.

Who is in it?
Kieran Culkin, Jena Malone, Jodie Foster, Vincent
D'Onofrio

Why should I see it?
"The notion that children can shed their mortal flesh
(in their imaginations and dreams) is fantastically
suggested via the film's many animated sequences.
Faith and the possibility of mortal transcendence is
particularly potent in these escape-from-reality
scenarios though the director spends equal time
authenticating the simple joys and brutal horrors of
youth with walks through abandoned homes, bashful
evocations of first-kisses and awkward, ethereal
declarations of love." --Ed Gonzalez, © slant magazine

Late Marriage
SHOW DATE: 5/19
SPEAKER(S): TBA

Here's some information about the film:

What is this week’s film?
Late Marriage
(See review in Friday's NY Times)
Israel, 2001, 112 min, dir. Dover Kashashveli
In Hebrew and Georgian with Englsih subtitles

Tell me about it?
A very funny, sometimes painful account of one man’s
late journey of self-discovery. Zaza (Lior Loui
Ashkenazi) is thirty-one years old, and his parents,
Yasha (Moni Moshonov) and Lily (the director’s own
mother, Lili Kosashvili), are supporting him while he
attends grad school. They believe in the traditions of
"the old country," and they are distraught and
embarrassed because their only son is not married.
They discover that Zaza is having a torrid affair with
an older woman. Kosashvili eschews easy laughs,
stereotypes, and clichés in favor of subtly performed,
well-observed family drama.

Why should I see it?
“This superbly played film, directed with remarkable
skill for a first-time feature filmmaker, is truly an
adult drama: It deals with the kind of compromises and
sacrifices that, for better or worse, come with
maturity.” -- Ken Fox, TV GUIDE
