Cinema Sundays continues its 42nd series with the Baltimore premiere of The much acclaimed documentary Young @ Heart. Needless to say songs like Staying Aliv e and I Wanna Be Sedated take on a whole new meaning when your average performer is in their 80’s! (and we ain’t talking 1980’s.)

Our speaker for this week is Linda DeLibero, associate director of the Film and Media Studies program at Johns Hopkins. Linda did most excellent work for us with The Three Burials of Melchiades Estrada and it’s a pleasure to welcome her back to Cinema Sundays.

Cinema Sundays at the Charles continues its 42nd series on April 13th with the Baltimore Premiere of The Life Before Her Eyes. Directed by Vadim Perelman. Written by Emil Stern, based on the novel by Laura Kasischke. Starring Uma Thurman, Evan Rachel Wood, and Eva Amurri.

Synopsis

Imaginative, impetuous and wild Diana (Evan Rachel Wood) can't wait for her adult life to begin. Whiling away the final days of high school in the lush springtime, Diana tests her limits with sex and drugs as her more conservative friend Maureen (Eva Amurri) watches with concern. But Diana's aura of invincibility is shattered when a senseless act of violence erupts at school, forever changing the lives of the two best friends.

Fifteen years later, a grown Diana (Uma Thurman) is still trying to come to terms with the traumatic events of that fateful day. On the surface, the adult Diana has made a picture perfect life for herself. But all is not well—as the anniversary of her adolescent trauma approaches, the darkness that Diana has tried to escape closes in.

Cinema Sundays continues its 42nd series with the Baltimore premiere of The Life Before Her Eyes. Uma Thurman (sigh) stars in this intriguing psychological study directed by Vadim Perelman who directed the most excellent House of Sand and Fog.

Our speaker for this week is Forensic Psychologist Dr. Larry Raifman. We all remember his poignant analysis of The Squid and the Whale and L’Enfant. It’s a pleasure to welcome him back to Cinema Sundays.

I want to thank Dr. Sharon Bisco for being such a good sport and having a go with Alice’s House sight unseen. I also want to thank the Cinema Sundays audience for your patience with our lack of print situation last week.

Cinema Sundays Winter 2008 Series 41!

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

Cinema Sundays at the Charles begins its 42nd series on April 6th with the Baltimore Premiere of Chapter 27. Written and directed by J.P. Schaefer. Starring Jared Leto, Lindsay Lohan, and Judah Friedlander.

Synopsis

On December 8, 1980 Mark David Chapman shocked the world by murdering John Lennon. Chapman’s motives were fabricated from pure delusion, fueled by an obsession with the fictional character Holden Caulfield and his similar misadventures in J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye. In one instant, an anonymous, mentally unstable 25-year old, socially awkward Beatles fan who had fluctuated between idealizing Lennon and being overcome with a desire to kill him – altered the course of history.

Cinema Sundays begins its 42nd series with the Baltimore premiere of Chapter 27. Jared Leto gained a mere 60 pounds to take on this role in this extremely controversial film. After enjoying ourselves thoroughly with The Grand, Cinema returns to its roots…disturbed minds and dysfunctional people. It’s good to be back.

Our speaker for this week is Psychiatrist Dr. Sharon Bisco. Dr. Bisco did such fine work for Cinema Sundays with Lars and the Real Girl and her insights into Chapter 27 should be fabulous.

I want to thank Mike Lurie for his work on The Grand. We all had far too much fun. I don’t know about you but I’m getting a cup a Joe, I’m going to see the milkman, and I’m taking it up the beanstalk.
