Mrs Palfrey At The Claremont
SHOW DATE: 4/30
SPEAKER(S): TBA
Here's some information about the film:
Directed by Dan Ireland and written by Ruth Sacks and Elizabeth Taylor. Starring Joan Plowright, Rupert Friend, Zoe Tapper, Anne Massey. 2005 UK. Running time 108 minutes. Unrated! Here is the official Site complete with trailer. http://www.mrspalfreythemovie.com/ Description The story centers around an elegant elderly lady (Mrs Palfrey) who, after being recently widowed, moves from Scotland to London to be near to her 26 year old grandson, Desmond. When Desmond fails to return any of her several phone calls, or visit her at the resident hotel she is staying (The Claremont), fate brings her together with a young writer, Ludovic Meyer, after she has an accident outside his basement flat.
Eventually, Ludo ends up helping Mrs. Palfrey by playing a charade - pretending to be her grandson, so that the other off-beat elderly residents of the hotel believe that she hasn't been lying, and that she really does have a grandson.
The two newly found friends discover they have a lot more in common with each other then they do with other people their own age.
Ludo inadvertently leads Mrs Palfrey through her past; Mrs Palfrey inadvertently leads Ludo to his future. The young writer finally finds the story he has been looking for all his young life - and Mrs Palfrey finds the 'grandson' she never knew she had. Thus begins a deep-rooted friendship that is far reaching, and everlasting.
Along the way, a few problems arise when her real grandson shows up at the hotel.
What! Another English film! Gewalt! Yes indeed ladies and gentlemen we leave the Midlands for London and the world of kinky footwear for the lascivious world of live in hotels! Actually it’s not a bit lascivious, sigh…but it might just be a great film. I have to confess that last week’s movie, Kinky Boots, exceeded all of my expectations and it’s always nice when this occurs on the big screen. Everyone seemed to enjoy the film very much…men women and those who haven’t quite made up their mind. So whichever you happen to be why not amble off to the Charles Sunday morning where anything can and often does happen Due to my indolence so far this week our speaker is TBA but I have some ideas up my sleeve!

Description With the sudden death of his father, Charlie Price (Joel Edgerton) takes up the reins of the family’s traditional, Northampton shoe business, Price and Sons. But Charlie quickly discovers it is not business as usual and without new orders, bankruptcy looms. As a sceptical workforce debate their novice manager, Charlie looks to London for solutions, and in a chance encounter, discovers sassy cabaret star, Lola (Chiwetel Ejiofor), whose Soho world of outrageous fashion and stylish, erotic boots for men, opens his eyes to an intriguing niche market, a long way from men’s classic brogues.
With trepidation, but spurred on by feisty factory worker Lauren (Sarah Jane Potts), Charlie enlists Lola’s help to diversify and make erotic women’s boots for a male market. But Lola’s arrival at the provincial factory is greeted with ridicule and animosity, not least by Nicola, Charlie’s girlfriend (Jemima Rooper). The hapless but lovable Charlie ploughs ahead with Lola, who, hiding her own insecurities, takes charge of design and employs some of her show-stopping bravado to help win over the fractured workforce and bring the boots to life.
With only weeks to go until the crucial Milan Shoe Fair, the factory is in full swing with leopard skins and PVC replacing the bronzed suedes and shiny leather, but it is now Charlie’s drive for perfection and success which threatens the production line and Milan. Finally the pressure gets to Charlie and he turns on Lola, losing his biggest asset and ally on the eve of the Milan Shoe Fair.
I hope everyone had a great break celebrating or not celebrating Passover or Easter. (Love that Matzoh!) Cinema Sundays continues its 36th series with Kinky Boots. This touching tale of fetish footwear and economic independence should provide entertainment for all. (If we could only snag the Bettie Page film my life would be complete.)
Our speaker this week is Violet Glaze (her real name) from the City Paper it’s a pleasure to welcome her back to Cinema Sundays.

Well here we are week two of our Spring series and we have what promises to be a fabulous film and a great speaker. Thanks to Murray Horwitz of AFI who was nice enough to drive up 95 to have a chat with us. This week we leave the strangeness of Mexican apartment living for the battlefields of France. The events of Christmas 1914 should provide for much discussion Sunday morning and I look forward to seeing you. Hopefully the weather will be absolutely wretched in the morning at least and everyone will show up at CSC. This academy award nominee film has been receiving terrific reviews don?t miss it
Our speaker this week is Dr. Ariel Roth, assistant professor of international relations at Goucher College. Dr. Roth has researched and taught extensively on the strategy and tactics of World War I and is the author of the essay, "Valhalla Lost: World War I in the Arts and Music".
