In 1970, authors Clifford Irving (Richard Gere) and Richard Suskind (Alfred Molina) get together and devise a scheme that they're sure will make them wealthy. After doing extensive research, Irving writes an unauthorized biography of reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes – filled with fictional events.
Using forged documents, he convinces publishing company McGraw-Hill that he has a close relationship with Hughes, and successfully signs a lucrative book deal. Naturally, when the bogus book comes out, experts immediately question its authenticity, but McGraw-Hill stands by Irving. Irving’s plan is carried out so persuasively that even when Hughes momentarily emerges from seclusion to address the media in a telephone news conference and discredits the book, McGraw-Hill continues to support him.

Synopsis
Directed and co-written by Daniele Thompson ("La Bûche," "Jet Lag"), and selected as France's Official Entry for this year's Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar, "Avenue Montaigne" centers around Jessica (Cecile de France) a beautiful young woman from the provinces who comes to Paris and lands a job waiting tables at a chic bistro on fabled Avenue Montaigne, the city's nexus for art, music, theater and fashion. Jessica's customers include a popular TV actress (Valérie Lemercier) who is courting a major Hollywood director (Sydney Pollack) for her first serious film role; a wealthy art collector (Claude Brasseur) who is about to liquidate a lifetime's worth of treasures at auction; and an illustrious classical pianist (Albert Dupontel) who is at odds with his manager/wife (Laura Morante) as to where his career is headed. Precisely because Jessica doesn't know how celebrated these people are, her guileless and completely unintimidated engagement in their lives has a transforming effect on them – and ultimately her.

Cinema Sundays returns with Avenue Montaigne a charming comedy which was France’s entry in this year’s academy awards. Cinema Sundays is almost embarrassed to present a film devoid of angst, misery and dysfunctional families. However, those desperately in need of existential dread can find copious amounts in The Charles’ current Bergman retrospective (which is fabulous!). By the way this film is titled Avenue Montaigne in the USA. The working title in Canada was Orchestra Seats which was a more accurate translation of the French Fauteuils D’ Orchestre.
Our speaker for this week is Jed Dietz from the Maryland Film Festival. I have been trying to lure him back to Cinema Sundays for ages and have finally succeeded.
I am so looking forward to seeing you on Sunday,
