The History Boys" centers on an unruly class of bright, funny teenage boys in pursuit of sex, sport and a college degree. Bounced between their maverick English teacher (Richard Griffiths), a young and shrewd professor hired to up their test scores (Stephen Campbell Moore), a grossly out-numbered history teacher (Frances de la Tour), and a headmaster obsessed with results (Clive Merrison), the boys attempt to sift through it all to pass the daunting university admissions process. Their journey becomes as much about how education works, as it is about where education leads.

Cinema Sundays at the Charles is absolutely thrilled to conclude our 37th series with The History Boys! Based on Allan Bennett’s Tony Award winning play (six of them!) The History Boys could be the most interesting and thought provoking work about education in a long time (ok there’s The Wire this season but work with me here!). This film should combine a razor sharp script with sensational performances to produce a consummate CSC event! I have always enjoyed Allan Bennett’s work ever since his Beyond the Fringe Days.

Our speaker for this week is the incomparable, talented, witty and Tony Award winning Murray Hurwitz who comes to us from AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring. Murray joined us for Duck Season (Temporada di Patos) last January and it’s a pleasure to welcome him back.

Well ladies and gentlemen it was Fur better or in this case Fur worse…either way an enchanting morning at the Charles Theatre was had by all. Hats off to Nicole Kidman and as for Robert Downy Jr., not even a complete body shave could save his character. Thanks so much to Chris Kaltenbach from the Baltimore Sun for doing such a great job. CSC definitely owes him a masterpiece for his next appearance.

On to bigger and better things. This week’s film promises to be a hit at CSC. What could be better than a drug addicted dysfunctional relationship between poet and art student. Our speaker this week is Dr. Larry Raifman who did such a fine job on L’ Enfant and The Squid and the Whale. His psychological insight is always welcome. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday.
