Cinema Sundays Fall 2007 Series 40! Sunday, December 2, 2007 Cinema Sundays at the Charles continues its 40th series on December 2nd with the Baltimore Premiere of The Walker. Written and Directed by Paul Schrader. Starring Woody Harrelson, Kristen Scott Thomas, Lauren Bacall, Ned Beatty, Lily Tomlin, Willem Dafoe. 2007 USA, Rated R 108 minutes Synopsis A contemporary drama set in Washington, D.C., THE WALKER centers around Carter Page (Harrelson), a well-heeled and popular socialite who serves as confidant, companion, and card partner to some of the capitol’s leading ladies. These pampered women are married to the most powerful men in America, and when their husbands are too busy running the country to attend to their wives, they turn to their “gay best friend,” Carter, for warmth, wit, and wisdom. Carter’s loyalty is tested when his dearest friend (Scott Thomas) finds herself on the brink of a scandal that could destroy her reputation and her husband’s career. Offering to cover for her, Carter suppresses incriminating evidence, only to find himself the chief suspect in a criminal investigation. Suddenly, this well-connected man-about-town is a pariah, hounded by the police and forced to find the true culprit and clear his name. More importantly, he must re-examine whether it is important to be accepted by a society based on betrayal, hypocrisy, and corruption. Nothing like a little scandal just down the pike in the nation’s capital to keep everything fresh. This latest project from Paul Schrader should prove most interesting. Our speaker for this week is Joseph Schaub from Notre Dame. He did such nice work for CSC on Gabrielle and Fracture. It’s a pleasure to welcome him back to CSC. I want to thank Phil Jacobs for doing such a fine job with O Jerusalem…not the easiest of subjects to deal with and yet you did great. Two quick announcements; 1)The Charles is extremely pleased to present the current season of La Scala on the big screen. The first HD screening of Verdi’s Aida will take place on December 5 at 2 Pm. and will be repeated on Sunday 12/9 at Seven. 2)If you wish to purchase memberships to CSC as holiday gifts for those you care for, our 41st season begins on Jaunary 6. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday it’s going to be hot. Jonathan Palevsky Jpalevsky@aol.com

Synopsis
O Jerusalem meticulously re-creates the historic struggle surrounding the creation of the State of Israel in 1948. At the center of these events are two young, American friends - one Jewish, the other Arab. The film is told from the alternating viewpoints of the Jews, Arabs and Brits, all of whom collide in their fight for the control of Jerusalem while bringing to the forefront themes of courage, terrorism, deprivation, politics and a strong sense of morality. Their involvement takes them from the streets of New York to The Holy Land, where they risk their lives – making incredible sacrifices along the way – to fight for what they believe in, as the city of their dreams teeters on the brink of destruction. The film, based on historical accounts from the best-selling novel O Jerusalem, written by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre, offers a rich background to an explosive conflict that echoes the situation in the Middle East today.

Cinema Sundays continues its all star 40th series with the Baltimore premiere of O Jerusalem. Nothing like a little middle east political and social controversy to liven up a peaceful Sunday morning. I’m looking forward to a feisty post film discussion.
Our speaker is at this point TBA but I am scouring Baltimore for an appropriate mid-east expert! Look for further updates shortly.
