Cinema Sundays continues its 41st series with the Baltimore premiere of The Bank Job. We leave America in the sixties for London in the 70’s and a film depicting the caper of the century! Roger Donaldson (World’s Fastest Indian, No Way Out) directs this crime thriller which should keep everyone on the edge of their seats.
Unfortunately, I will not be able to be with you this week and I leave you in the capable hands of Cinema Sundays favorite, Mike Giuliano who will be joined by speaker Violet Glaze from Baltimore’s City Paper.
I want to thank Mark Steiner for taking some time from a very busy schedule to spend a few hours at the Charles. Everyone appreciated your insights into the period and the film. I also want to thank everyone who shared their experiences and thoughts on what was a very moving Sunday morning.
Meanwhile back at the La Scala front at the Charles. Everyone really loved Verdi’s La Traviata this past week…except Violetta who died. Our next foray into High Definition operatic splendor will take place March 26th and 30th and will be Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda.
I look forward to seeing you on Sunday.

Cinema Sundays Winter 2008 Series 41!
Sunday, February 24th, 2008
Cinema Sundays at the Charles Continues its 41st series on February 24th with the Baltimore Premiere of the documentary Chicago 10. Written and Directed by Brett Morgin. Starring the voices of Hank Azaria, Dylan Baker, Nick Nolte, Mark Ruffalo, Roy Scheider, Liev Schreiber and Jeffrey Wright. Also starring the Chicago 7 and a whole lot of angry policemen as themselves.
Synopsis
Written and directed by Brett Morgen (THE KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE), CHICAGO 10 presents contemporary history with a forced perspective, mixing bold and original animation with extraordinary archival footage that explores the build-up to and unraveling of the Chicago Conspiracy Trial. Set to the music of revolution, then and now, CHICAGO 10 is a parable of hope, courage and ultimate victory, the story of young Americans speaking out and taking a stand in the face of an oppressive and armed gove rnment.
At the 1968 Democratic Convention, protestors, denied permits for demonstrations, repeatedly clashed with the Chicago Police Department, who waged a week-long terror campaign that resulted in riots witnessed live by a television audience of over 50 million.
Needing to find a scapegoat for the riots, the Government held eight of the most vocal activists accountable for the violence and brought them to trial a year later. The defendants represented a broad cross-section of the anti-war movement, from counter-culture icons Abbie Hoffman (voiced by Hank Azaria) and Jerry Rubin (Mark Ruffalo) to renowned pacifist David Dellinger (Dylan Baker). Seven of the defendants were represented by Leonard Weinglass and famed liberal attorney William Kunstler (Liev Schreiber), who went head-to-head with prosecution attorney Thomas Foran (Nick Nolte). The eighth defendant, Bobby Seale (Jeffrey Wright), co-chair of the Black Panther Party, insisted on defending himself a nd was bound, gagged and handcuffed to his chair by Judge Julius Hoffman (Roy Scheider). From the start, the trial was a circus with the eight defendants on a collision course with the governmental authority.
Eschewing talking-head interviews and omniscient narration, CHICAGO 10 allows the viewer to experience the drama and tragedy of Chicago in a unique and dynamic style. The film moves back and forth from the streets of Chicago to the courtroom at an exciting and accelerating pace that brings the past into the present.

Cinema Sundays Winter 2008 Series 41!
Sunday, February 10th, 2008
Cinema Sundays at the Charles Continues its 41st series on February 10th with the Baltimore Premiere of In Bruges. Written and Directed by Martin McDonagh. Starring Colin Farrell, Brendon Gleeson, Ralph Fiennes, Clemence Poesy, Jordan Prentice, Jerenie Renier and the unstoppable Zeljko Ivanek.
2008 UK/Belgium, Rated R 107 minutes
Synopsis
Bruges, the most well-preserved medieval city in the whole of Belgium, is a welcoming destination for travelers from all over the world. But for hit men Ray and Ken, it could be their final destination; a difficult job has resulted in the pair being ordered right before Christmas by their London boss Harry to go and cool their heels in the storybook Flemish city for a couple of weeks. Very much out of place amidst the gothic architecture, canals, and cobbled streets, the two hit men fill their days living the lives of tourists. Ray, still haunted by the bloodshed in London, hates the place, while Ken, even as he keeps a fatherly eye on Ray, finds his mind and soul being expanded by the beauty and serenity of the city. But the longer they wait for Harry’s call, the more surreal their experience becomes, as they find themselves in weird encounters with locals, tourists, violent medieval art, a dwarf American actor shooting a European art film, Dutch prostitutes, and a potential romance for Ray. When the call from Harry does finally come, Ken and Ray’s vacation becomes a life-and-death struggle of darkly comic proportions and surprisingly emotional consequences.

Cinema Sundays continues its 41st series with the Baltimore premiere of In Bruges. This surreal comedy blending homicide with tourism (the tagline of the film… ”Shoot First Sightsee Later”!) sounds like just the ticket for Cinema Sundays fare.
Our speaker for this week is Max Weiss from Baltimore Magazine and WBAL. I think she’s going to be perfect for In Bruges…I’m just not sure why. It’s a pleasure to welcome her back to Cinema Sundays.
I want to thank Mike Giuliano for helping us out with The Year My Parents Went On Vacation. I think everyone thoroughly loved the film as well as Mike’s observations.
