Synopsis

OLD JOY is the story of two old friends, Kurt (Will Oldham) and Mark (Daniel London), who reunite for a weekend camping trip in the Cascade mountain range east of Portland, Oregon. OLD JOY is a minimalist story of friendship, loss and alienation in the Bush era. For Mark, the weekend outing offers a respite from the pressure of his imminent fatherhood; for Kurt, it is part of a long series of carefree adventures. As the hours progress and the landscape evolves, the twin seekers move through a range of subtle emotions, enacting a pilgrimage of mutual confusion, sudden insight, and recurring intimations of spiritual battle. When they arrive at their final destination, a hot spring in an old growth forest, they must either confront the divergent paths they have taken, or somehow transcend their growing tensions in an act of forgiveness and mourning.

After all the excitement last week with a practically sold out screening for Sherrybaby Cinema Sundays is going to calm things down with a film full of meditative contemplation and introspection. Old Joy is another film that has received very positive reviews and attention yet never seemed to come to our fair city. Cinema Sundays is pleased to right that wrong.

Our speaker this week is Diane Finlayson from WYPR and also the founder and Executive Director of yama studio. Diane’s contemplative approach to life and living should blend well with this week’s film.

Ladies and Gentlemen! Sometimes things just go your way, everything does come up roses and your ship comes in. I have been looking forward to presenting Sherrybaby at Cinema Sundays for months on end and it has finally come to pass. Sometimes the film gods just smile upon you and who am I to insult them.

Our speaker this week is Psychologist Beth Williams-Plunkett who returns to Cinema Sundays having done such a nice job with Bee Season last year. I think we can look forward to a pithy discussion following the film.

Cinema Sundays at the Charles is absolutely thrilled and frankly honoured (note Brit spelling) to continue our 38th series with The Baltimore Premiere of Venus! Peter O’Toole, who has only managed to win an honorary Oscar to this date, might just end up with one for his performance in this highly regarded film. Combining a fine English Director and Writer with this excellent cast should make for great Sunday Morning Viewing.

Our Speaker for this Week is Max Weiss from Baltimore Magazine and WBAL. Max did such a nice job for us with The Queen where she managed to parse out all the various stag symbols. It’s a pleasure to have her back for what should be another excellent British film.

Cinema Sundays at the Charles is absolutely thrilled begin our 38th series with The Baltimore Premiere of Miss Potter! Based on the life story of noted ‘kid lit’ author Beatrix Potter. Considering the success of Johnny Depp in Finding Neverland , it’s pretty clear that no child literature author is safe from an extensive film treatment. Look for a Dr. Seuss biopic and Broadway show next Christmas. Despite some quibbling by English linguists over Ms. Zellweger’s accent this promises to be an entertaining film.

Our speaker for this week is Paul Zinder from the American University of Rome it’s a pleasure to welcome him back to CSC. I also want to thank Murray Hurwitz from AFI for doing such a nice job with the History Boys to conclude last season’s screenings.
