Synopsis

In `60s New Zealand, at the bottom of the world, Burt Munro takes a 1920 Indian motorcycle and, delightfully without resources other than his own obsession and a Kiwi #8 wire mentality, spends his retirement rebuilding the bike and following his dream to go to Speed Week at Salt Lake in Utah. Under funded, without the support of a team and against all the odds he not only makes it to Bonneville, he sets a world land speed record, not once, but again and again.

As an ex-motorcycle driver (and probably the worst one ever?just ask the Impala I crashed into) I am positively thrilled to be presenting the Baltimore premiere of The World?s Fastest Indian. Rumor has it Anthony Hopkins was so thrilled with this role he would have done it for free (he didn?t but he would have!). We are also hoping to have a couple of Indian bikes on hand so you can get an eyeful before the film.

If you?ve never been to Cinema Sundays before, see below for our stimulating yet official description.

Our speaker for this week is Tom Finn from the Chesapeake Branch of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America. It?s a pleasure to welcome him to Cinema Sundays.

I hope you will join us for this star studded cast and fabulous production values of this latest Merchant/Ivory offering. Lots of pretty people in 1930’s China, a bagel, a cup of coffee, a discussion…What could be bad. It was such a pleasure to see so many people at our first film this series, and Albert Brook’s Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World certainly led to lots of interesting discussion. If you’ve never been to Cinema Sundays before, see below for our stimulating yet official description.

Our speaker for this week is Shannon Dunne from the Johns Hopkins Office of Cultural Affairs. It’s a pleasure to welcome her back.

This offbeat comedy should make a fabulous first offering for our Winter series.

Also exciting is that we are presenting the new Merchant Ivory film The White Countess on January 22. In light of these two excellent films now is a fabulous time to renew your CSC subscription or take one out for the first time. We guarantee you a fabulous bagel, stimulating coffee and a film plus discussion to match. The standard CSC propaganda is at the bottom of this letter so I will save you the usual guff. Suffice it to say it’s a fabulous thing to do on Sunday mornings only equaled by private tours of the Sistine Chapel or a private audience with Uma Thurman. Everyone seemed to have a great time last season and the discussions seemed to get more intense as the series continued. Needless to say I, and the most excellent staff at CSC, will be working hard to give you the finest experience possible.
