Lantana
SHOW DATE: 1/6
SPEAKER(S): Lee Gardner

Here's some information about the film:

Who directed it? Ray Lawrence ("Bliss")

Who is in it? Anthony LaPaglia, Barbara Hershey, Geoffrey Rush, Rachael Blake, Kerry Armstrong.

What is it about? Unfolding against the backdrop of a woman's disappearance, "Lantana" is a domestic, noir thriller that draws into the mystery four complex couples whose fates are inextricably tied.

Why should I see it? "There is tragedy and death in 'Lantana,' but it isn't really a thriller despite its neo-noir furnishings; the mysteries it investigates are more difficult to solve than any murder. Elegant but never overstated, sinister but never coldhearted, this is a note-perfect masterwork on a modest, human scale. Imagine 'American Beauty' crossbred with Ingmar Bergman's 'Scenes From a Marriage' and transposed down under, except that 'Lantana' has a cool sense of tragedy and surprising reserves of passion that are all its own."
--Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com

Who is this week's guest speaker? Lee Gardner, arts editor at City Paper, makes his first encore performance at Cinema Sundays.
